Pavilion Pavilion Pavilion

CUBA HALL OF

The participation of the Cuban Republic in the Great Exhibition was initially quite uncertain, mainly due to the proximity of 98 and the country's political instability given by the rivalry between liberal and conservative parties that had led to the Liberals in 1906 to benefit from the amendment Platt U.S. request the imposition of a military administration, creating an unfavorable environment for participation in a contest that proclaimed the junction between the Hispanic peoples. It is therefore not surprising that the first invitation to the Cuban government in 1911, he replied in an evasive requesting more information before deciding.

The political environment had changed, when, after a few years, Cuba answered yes to the new invitation to participate in the Exhibition in September 1926. First decided to build a temporary flag, but later modified by a permanent and one temporary.

On December 22, 1927, the Cuban government enacted a law that is assigned weight passes 50,000 to cover the cost of its participation in the exhibition being extended this amount to 160,000 in early 1928. The Standing Committee gives a plot of 7,000 m2 located in the Avd de la Reina Victoria, next to the flag of the Dominican Republic, formalizing the delivery of land on June 9, 1928, of which 2,000 m2 and the rest would be built designed to cultivate gardens where tropical plants.

The Cuban flag was designed by the architects of that country D. Evelio Govantes and D. Felix Cabarrocas and executed members of the army under the command of the military engineers Wise and Luis Hernández González Alfonso del Real, was completed on April 24, 1929.

This flag was made up as we have indicated two buildings permanent 30 x 10 m. and an interim of 45 x 30 m. The permanent flag or the main building foundation is built with reinforced concrete strip footing very thick on the walls also was built of reinforced concrete that supported a load-bearing walls, they brickwork on the facade, metal girders perpendicular to the main facade and reinforced concrete slabs. The central and side covered in Arabic tiles carried on wooden planks.

The main building had two floors and lookout tower, following its composition to the traditional model of town and whose elements are characteristic of Cuban architecture, as are the front porch, formed by a great arcade built with stones brought from quarries Jaimanitas Cuban, the grand staircase of mahogany from Cuba, which begins in the lobby and the lookout, also all constructed with wood pieces, such as balconies, coffered , bars, trims and balustrades, hardwood were used as the caobam, dagame, sabicu, júcro, virgin blood, yaba, oak, walnut cuje, hibiscus, Achan, jocuna, etc., existing models were repeated in Cuba, developed from themes Seville and Canarian architecture.

representation it is certainly a valuable Cuban flag, albeit with some inferiority complex, because the commission of that country, argued that they had a "national style", because it meets the most luxurious materials could provide construction, giving it a colonial air to the building.

The distribution of the main building was simple, on the ground floor housed the great hall, which is integrated behind the porch with Cuban elements such as columns the Cathedral of Havana and Camagüey windows from this place and after a double arch, kicks off the grand staircase, where you can admire a magnificent carved masks topped by a lantern and giving access to first floor. Under the stairs and filling the left wing, they set some rooms and auxiliary facilities. Also on the ground floor auditorium stood a solemn ceremonies and receptions and offices of the committee. This plant was decorated with paintings by contemporary Cuban painters pensioned by the government, also also exposed a bust of General Machado.

On the first floor were the exhibitions of official agencies such as Public Works, War, Navy, Communications and Administration. Access to the lookout was done through a secondary staircase which led from this plant and where you could admire the colonial coffered ceiling and a raised level of the district center of Havana. You could also consider a curious selection of coins from colonial times to date: photos and graphics Navy and composition of the military, as well as models and plans of public works undertaken in the island.

The temporary pavilion was built in the rear of the main building and its height was equal to the ground floor of the permanent pavilion, possibly having to take the entire back of the plot, as seen in the photo air. This was composed of a central courtyard surrounded by galleries runs. Access to this building was through an existing door in the great hall opposite the front door, this building was demolished once the exhibition.

Elevation of the building

This settled the exhibition hall of the Ministries of Agriculture, Finance, Trade and Labor, with a miniature tarpiche showed the production of sugar in all its steps.
